Surprised there hasn't been a topic on this yet.

How is the dreaded H1N1 flu affecting you? My high school is missing like 30% of its students and almost half the teachers right now. They're considering closing down for a week to let things cool down.

Wow.
I remember that a few weeks ago I was missing like an average of 7 or 8 kids in every class...
A few days there were like over 100 kids missing (Out of about 1000. I've got a lot of kids in my school even with living in a smallish town)
I say people are making too big of a deal about it, especially the media. The media is all OMG SOMEONE DIED! PANIC!!!!
Hello, media? Yeah, there's like around a...say 10% maybe less chance that someone in the US is going to die from this. Please stop making us Americans panic. Thank you.
It's annoying. But I suppose that's what they're paid to do, make a big deal out of things to get better ratings.
Then again....I can't justify all of this is true....but this is my sole opinion.

Basically the facts as I know them are this:
  • Almost everybody will catch the flu (an average of) once a year.
  • 95% of people who catch the flu this year will contract the H1N1 strain.
  • About 30% of the population will have a natural immunity to the virus.
  • The fatality rate for H1N1 is only slightly higher than the regular flu (read: really freaking low).

Sure, it may be annoying to catch, but the chances of contracting it and dying are so ridiculously low that you shouldn't even really care.

Yeah, I don't get sick. I don't care.

Also: it finally reached Canada? Sure took a while to get there.

Well at least if the school gets closed, you get a lie in.

Yeah, but now it's pretty much everywhere. People are panicking to get vaccination shots and everything. Funny story: about a week ago some of the inmates at a nearby prison facility were given the shots before everybody else, and now they're running out of it and don't have enough for us. Everybody's pissed. xD

its estimated that in my city, there are at least 30% of the pop. already have H1N1. I think that everyone is just over reacting. In Ontario, there have been about 25 people that have died from it. And mostly because their immune system was fighting it and left it wide open for pneumonia. People just need to suck it up, and get over it already. people are just going crazy about it: Flu Fashion

Update: 40-50% of students were absent yesterday, and there are more than 15 confirmed cases in the school. I found this out from a VP the other day when he came in for the attendance. The subsitutes have no idea what to do with the small classes, we just played Spoon and Crazy 8's, it was so fun.

Its overhyped, by far. Everyone just needs to chill out, its not much more than common flu.

I work in the catering department at a hotel; I have to deal with a lot of different people day in and day out. So the chances of getting it are quite high.
